Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tutorial Assistance

The aim of the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) is to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to participate equitably in your chosen field of study. Qualified tutors will work with you to assist your academic needs.

ITAS is a free program for UniSQ students as it is funded under a contract between UniSQ and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and is administered by the College for First Nations.

Tutoring times and locations

Currently, eligible students may access up to 2 hours per week per subject of tutorial assistance during the teaching period. Where required, a limited number of additional hours can be made available to assist with exam preparation each study period.

Typically, tutoring is one-to-one however, small group sessions may also be negotiated. Sessions are arranged at a mutually agreeable time and place, which can be on or off-campus, or they can take place via telephone, email or Skype. For on-campus tutoring, students and tutors have access to College for First Nations tutorial rooms and a computer lab. These rooms are available on a booking system and must be booked in advance to ensure they are free for use when required.

To be eligible to apply for ITAS, you must be:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate course at UniSQ
  • Assessed as being in need of supplementary tuition by College for First Nations academic staff.

If you are an Honours or Postgraduate student seeking tuition, please contact the College: CFN.support@unisq.edu.au, 1800 005 132, or 07 4631 2133.

How do I apply for ITAS?

If you would like to apply for tutorial assistance, please register your interest for the appropriate study period:

Please be aware that submitting an ITAS application does not guarantee ITAS tutorial assistance. Approval of ITAS application is subject to a number of things, including availability of funds and an appropriate tutor match.

What happens after I apply?

The College will assess your application and, if approved, will allocate you an ITAS tutor based on your learning needs. You will be notified by the College in writing of your tutoring arrangements. This will include your tutor’s contact details, the course code and name, and the maximum number of hours of tuition per week and per study period.

Student evaluation

Each study period, you will need to complete a ITAS Student Evaluation Form which helps us to improve the tutoring experience, assess the effectiveness of the program and whether or not changes need to be made. The survey forms will be emailed to you directly towards the end of the study period. Further tutorial assistance will not be approved until the Student Evaluation Form has been submitted.

If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please register your interest by completing the ITAS Tutor Registration Form. This is an expression of interest form only and does not guarantee work as an ITAS Tutor. Approval of tuition is based on a number of factors, including available funds and students’ educational needs.

Within this form, you will be asked to attach the following:

  • Proof of identity (certified copy of your passport, or birth certificate and driver’s licence)
  • Right to work documentation (Australian or NZ passport or Work Visa)
  • Certified copies of your qualifications (e.g. academic transcripts)
  • Resume/CV outlining any experience relevant to providing tuition, including to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

All tutors who work with minors (under 18 years of age) must have undertaken a Working with Children’s Check (PDF 224KB) and have been cleared to work with minors before tuition can commence.
